Blackpool midfielder Charlie Adam: It was disappointing not to beat Tottenham but we are still in the mix

Despite gaining a valuable point at White Hart Lane against Tottenham in the Premier League’s late kick-off on Saturday, Blackpool captain Charlie Adam felt his side could have had more for their troubles.

The match finished 1-1 after an 89^th minute Jermain Defoe strike cancelled out Adam’s 76^th minute penalty, but there was much more to the match than just those two incidents.

Despite Spurs having the majority of the chances, Blackpool looked to take the lead in the 75th minute through an Adam penalty after Dawson handled in the box, but the Scott failed to find the net with Gomes saving well to his left.

Less than a minute later, however, Gomes brought down Gary Taylor-Fletcher, with Adam, who many believed should have been sent off after a nasty tackle that saw Gareth Bale stretchered off earlier on, smashing home the spot-kick with no mistake.

After piling on the pressure, Defoe equalised in the 88^th minute after drilling a shot home from just outside the box, but despite almost eight minutes of injury time, Spurs couldn’t add to his strike.

The point takes Blackpool out of the relegation zone, level on points with Wigan, but Adam felt they could have earned all three points.

Speaking to ESPN after the match, Adam said: “It’s a good result here, obviously they’ve played in the Champions League and they’ve got some top international players.

“But to be one ahead with eight minutes to go, it’s disappointing. But you know, we’ve come here and played.

“I think everyone can be proud of the effort they’ve given. It was a terrific team performance, and unfortunately we didn’t get the three points, but we’re still in the mix and it goes to next weekend with Bolton at home.”

Some eyebrows were raised in the 76^th minute when Adam stepped up to take his second penalty in a minute, just moments after missing his first, but Blackpool’s captain felt he had to take it, much to the disappointment of DJ Campbell.

He continued: “No, there was no chance of that Campbell taking the penalty, but that just shows that everyone wants to step up to the mark and take responsibility.

“You know, after missing that I felt that I had to take the second one. I know a lot of people were disappointed at missing the first but the important thing is the game and we managed to get the goal and I think we maybe deserved the three points, but we definitely deserved the point away from home here.

“It means a lot because we’re in the best league in the world,” he added. “We’re playing against some of the best players and it is difficult week in week out and we’ve had some tough times over the last few years but to come to a place like White Hart Lane and at times to play terrific football it just shows how far we’ve come.

“We’ve got a good squad and hopefully we can progress and move on to next week because like I said we’re still in the mix and we’ve got a home game next week.”
