Robert Pattinson and Reese Witherspoon fly under radar in Sydney

ROBERT Pattinson managed to give his fans the slip when he flew into Sydney last night and he continued to fly under the radar for a morning press conference at Luna Park with Water For Elephants co-star Reese Witherspoon.

There was no sign of any fans before or after the press conference.

Pattinson was dressed in a blue jacket and brown shirt for the occasion.

Witherspoon was casual but gorgeous in black jumber and jeans.

The glamorous pair had just flown in from London.

Pattinson is on his first ever visit to Australia and it is Witherspoon’s first visit in 15 years.

Director Francis Lawrence said Witherspoon was the first person he pitched for the role of Marlena in the film, which is based on the acclaimed number-one bestselling book of the same name.

“In fact she was the first and only person,” he said.

On her co-star Pattinson he said:

“I knew I wanted to cast him once I sat down with him. He’s a bit like the character.

“There is a purity to his heart and a warmth. Sometimes he pretends to be a little bit cynical but he is not.”

Pattinson, who is best known for his role as teen vampire Edward in the hugely popular Twilight series said his Water for Elephants role is a new chapter post Twilight.

“I can see my career following a gradual progression in a lot of ways,” he said.

“It’s just that no-one saw my other movies before Twilight”.

Witherspoon also spoke about her “incredible experience” preparing for her role in the film in which she performs circus tricks and works with elephants and horses.

“I got to train with Tai the elephant for three months,” she said.

“I went to circus school to learn how to do trapeze and acrobatics.

“It was a unique experience but it was also daunting and scary.”

Witherspoon did all the stunts with the elephants and the horses bar one horse sequence which used a stunt double.

Pattinson also spoke of his views on Twitter.

“I never use it,” he said.

“I have never found anything interesting on it. I don’t know how it works.”

His only Twitter experience was being in a restaurant and seeing fellow diners Tweeting his location.

“I wanted to shove the phone down their throat,” he said.

He said he doesn’t understand why his fans don’t just come up and say “hello”.

“Do they want it to be complete mayhem when they leave the restaurant?

“What I don’t like is people being sneaky, Tweeting and taking photographs.”
