Athletics Kenya have completed their selection of 25 athletes for the Africa junior championships in Botswana between May 12-15.
The squad was selected after the fourth Athletics Kenya /National Bank of Kenya meeting in Mumias last weekend. The team will only have three days of training starting tomorrow before heading south on Tuesday.
National cross country junior champion Janet Kisa and Purity Cherotich are the standout names in the squad and are expected to be the in the 5,000 and 3,000m events.
Kenya expect stiff competition from South Africa, Nigeria and Ethiopia at the four day event. “We have only a short time but the athletes were identified early and started training on their own” said coach Amos Rono.
The team is Boys: Newton Kipngeno 100m , Mike Mokamba 100 /200m, Alpash Kishoyian 200/400m, Anthony chemut 400 /800m, Jeremiam Mutai 400m hurdles, Christopher Ngetich 110/400m hurdles , Paul Muthiani Ngei 800m Hillary Kipkorir Maiyo 1,500m, Geoffrey Barusei 1,500m, Jairus Birech 3,000m steeplechase, Gilbert Kirui 3,000m s/chase, Abraham Kasongor 5,000/10,000m, Nicholas Togom 10,000m and Dominic Abunda hammer.
Women : Eunice Mueni 100/200m. Cheono Koech 800m, Nancy Chepkwemoi 1,500m, Stacy Ndiwa 1,500/3,000m, Purity Cherotich 3,000m, Catherine Kathure 3,000m, Veronicah Jepkosgei 3,000m s/chase, Joan Chepkemoi 3000m s/chase, Janet Kisa 5,000m, Caroline Chepkoech 5,000m
