When quizzed in a radio interview about how he received the news of his devastating defeat to Patricia Appiagyei, Hon Jumah categorically said, “I was shocked.”
Hon. Jumah confessed he never anticipated the embarrassing defeat, stressing that the action of the delegates prior to the polls made him to believe wrongly that he was going to win the polls.
He said the majority of the delegates, who are the kingmakers in the constituency, openly declared their support for him months before the polls and therefore did not anticipate such outcome.
Mr. Jumah disclosed that on the morning of the voting day about 225 delegates at Asokwa came to his house to reiterate their support for him.
He noted that the action of the delegates heightened his hope of retaining the seat without sweat, adding that he was surprised at the sudden turn of events.
“Even if all the 225 delegates that came to my house on the day of the election had voted for me I think it would have been enough for me to win the polls,” he said.
The dejected former Kumasi Mayor noted that what happened to him was normal in politics, adding “the Asokwa election is normal.”
On why he lost the primaries, Hon. Jumah could not readily pinpoint what went wrong for him, noting “I can’t tell what really went wrong with my campaign.”
He said he has taken the loss in good faith and was ready to offer his unflinching support to the eventual winner, Madam Patricia Appiagyei to face the NDC in 2012.
Mr. Jumah said members of the NPP should put the recent election, which was family affair behind them, and forge ahead in total unity to wrest political power from the NDC. “We need to work together as one people with a common destiny so as to unleash a devastating defeat on the NDC in the next general elections,” he indicated.
