Two weeks ago, the last Ecobank Super League fixture between URA and KCC in June looked like a potential title decider.
But on the back of the Lugogo-based side’s plummeting form, it now has the feel of a coronation for the tax collectors with five and three games left respectively.
After a 1-0 win over Police and KCC’s goalless draw against relegation battlers Fire Masters on Tuesday, URA (50) hold a nine-point advantage.
Even without the in-form midfielder Steven Bengo through suspension, URA showed patience to grind out a result against former league champions Police.
“There are games where we have picked three points without playing well. That’s because of our positive minds and experience,” URA coach Alex Isabirye, a devout Catholic, said while holding his rosary.
Four-point game
Four points from a possible nine against Maroons and Victors at home plus a final trip to KCC would land URA a fourth league title since the club’s formation in 2002.
“Our target is to finish strongly and prove we are worthy champions,” said URA’s right back Simeon Masaba. On current form, it’s difficult to see KCC (41 points) pick maximum points against Express, Police, Utoda and Maroons plus leaders URA.
On the end of the table, Maroons, Utoda, Fire Masters and Masaka are desperately fighting to avoid the drop. Gulu United, who have six points from 20 games, are already relegated.
