Tuesday, Ghana joined the rest of the free world in celebrating World Press Freedom Day, a celebration which could not have come at a better time. While the picture of journalism around the world is a potpourri of impressions since the last celebration, we can conclude that the challenges the occupation faces remain the same.

Lady Gaga, Beyonce, Justin Bieber and Rihanna have helped to raise $5 million (£3.13 million) for Japan’s earthquake/tsunami relief effort through the release of a charity compilation.

The pop stars were among a host of artists who offered up their hits for inclusion on Songs for Japan, a digital-exclusive collection, with all profits going towards the Japanese Red Cross relief appeal.

The project, which also includes tracks by Bon Jovi, Shakira, Foo Fighters and Adele, has proven to be a huge success and Reuters reports that organisers handed over a cheque for $2 million (£1.25 million) last month (Apr11), and another $3 million (£1.88 million) was donated on Monday (02May11).
