Liverpool are believed to be tracking the progress of Wigan Athletic midfielder James McCarthy.

The 20-year-old was thought to have declined a move to Merseyside from Hamilton before joining the Latics two years ago.

But the Reds are reportedly still interested in the midfielder, as the Daily Mail claims that assistant manager Sammy Lee was present during Wigan’s 1-1 draw with Everton to watch the player in action.

Wigan are currently fighting for survival in the Premier League, as they are in the relegation zone having amassed only 35 points from as many games.
