Gambia/Senegal: Countries in Wafu Cup Rivalry

Gambia will square with neighbours Senegal in a West Africa Football Union Cup rivalry in Nigeria.

Draws held in Abeokuta pit last year’s finalist Senegal, with Gambia’s Senior Scorpions as arch rivals, with Mali and Togo also seeded in the same group B.

Gambia’s last participation in a WAFU competition was back in 2008, in the U-20 category, and were paired with the Taranga Lions in the same pool, but will now have to avenge for their defeat to neighbours Senegal three years ago.

The championship tees-off in May 5th and ends May 15th. The Gambia local-based side are grouped in a pool that has Ghana and Togo as next opponent after the Senegal opener-all been common West African challengers.

The Gambian team under Lamin Sarr’s tutelage has commenced training since last Sunday with a hand few of senior national team players in defender Abdou Jammeh and striker Assan Jatta.

Speaking to this paper yesterday evening, the team’s technical gaffer, Lamin Sarr spoke of his confidence and believes he can qualify to the next level.

“I am of course hopeful. I am sure I will make it” he said in a short comment.
