Frances ‘Bought’ Delegates With Piece Of Garment

The New Patriotic Party’s parliamentary candidate for the Adenta Constituency, Madam Frances Awuraba Asiam allegedly gave some delegates pieces of garment and a cool fifty (GH¢50) in return for their votes.

Frances at the weekend won the contest for the Adenta seat to represent the NPP in the next parliamentary elections in 2012. She polled 129 votes as against 64 votes by her closest contender Yaw Boabeng Asamoah.

However facts emerging from that constituency indicates that a day before the primaries, thus on Friday April 29 Madam Frances distributed half pieces of GTP wax print and also doled out GH¢50 to delegates.

Some delegates indeed confirmed to the Lead newspaper about receiving the booty as a form of hand shake from her.
When asked whether the items were meant to influence delegates, they responded in the affirmative stating that Frances’ intention was implied by her action.

On Saturday, some of the items yet to be distributed were seen in green Toyota salon car with registration number GR 9135-09 packed a few yards from voting grounds.

When the Lead newspaper asked a member of Madam Asiam’s campaign team why they were sharing those items at the voting venue, the member said “the items were shared yesterday (Friday) but some delegates did not receive theirs, we therefore took the decision to share the rest of the items here so that no one is left out”

While refusing to concede that the items were meant to bribe delegates, this member of the Frances campaign team said “all the aspirants gave some items to the delegates as a form of inducement in one way or the other” adding “it is normal … this is not anything new”.

At the end of voting, Madam Asiam who has been described by many as “political prostitute” surprised political watchers by defeating Yaw Boabeng Asamoah and three others.

Madam Asaim’s victory did not go down well with some supporters who threatened to pull out from the NPP since they cannot work with the candidate.

The Constituency Organizer, Mr. Daniel Obeng Asihene, aka Abee openly declared that he has resigned from his position as the Constituency Organizer and said he would do all that he can to pull his people from the party.
