Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney revealed his attention has already turned to this Sunday’s Premier League game against Chelsea at Old Trafford after watching his side book a place in the Champions League final against Barcelona by beating Schalke 4-1 in the second leg of their semi-final.

The England international was one of several big names rested by manager Sir Alex Ferguson with Javier Hernandez, Ryan Giggs, Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic also given the night off, with the weekend’s game against the champions very much on the agenda.

Despite the weakened team, the Red Devils cruised to victory and writing on Twitter just minutes after the full time whistle, Rooney revealed he was thrilled with the result and was now eagerly anticipating Sunday’s big clash.

“Yes boys. Great result. Champions league final. Wembley here we come. Looking forward to Sunday now. Big result needed,” wrote Rooney after the game.

“Gibbo was class tonight scholes ran the show. Valencia. World class. Nice to see andow score to. Great team performance.”

Defender Rio Ferdinand was also quick to add his thoughts, tweeting: “Manager shuffled the pack(squad) + got the result we wanted, great use of our squad. #teamspirit lads were quality 2nite.

“Every1 saying how bad a team Schalke are etc….you weren’t saying that when they knocked Valencia + Inter Milan out before.”

Chelsea head to Old Trafford in good heart after a weekend which saw them close the gap on the league leaders to just three points after beating Tottenham whilst United lost to Arsenal at the Emirates.

Indeed a win for Carlo Ancelotti’s men will see them leap to the top of the Premier League, on goal difference, with just two games of the season remaining and the game could prove to be decisive in the race for the title.

The clubs have already met three times this season, Chelsea winning the league encounter at Stamford Bridge back in March, with United prevailing home and away in the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

Indeed the Red Devils are unbeaten at home this season, but will know that the last team to depart Old Trafford with all three points was Chelsea back in April of last year.
