John Mensah is battling to be fit
Sunderland boss Steve Bruce is hoping to have Ghana international John Mensah back in action after his adductor tear, but will not take a risk unless the defender is 100 per cent fit.
The centre-back has been on the sidelines since he was stretched off in the side’s Premier League clash against West Brom at the Stadium of Light.
The Black Cats are already without knee injury victims Fraizer Campbell and Titus Bramble while a host of other players are on the treatment table.
Bruce told the club’s official website: “John trained for three days last week, but in the past I’ve put him in and he’s broken down again.
“We’ll look to give him a full week’s training this week and take it from there
Mensah is expected to be handed a permanent deal at the club despite been unable to play 25 matches to trigger an extension.
