Liverpool legends Steve McManaman & Robbie Fowler considering Chechnya friendly appearance

Former Liverpool stars Steve McManaman and Robbie Fowler are considering whether to play in a showpiece friendly in Russia next week, according to the Daily Mail.

They would play in the same team as Diego Maradona along with a long list of former stars next Wednesday (May 11) in Chechnya, the Russian republic’s government have claimed.

Terek Grozny, managed by Ruud Gullit, would play host to the stars to mark the opening of the club’s new stadium.

Other players who have been lined up to participate are: Luis Figo, Fabien Barthez, Franco Baresi, Alessandro Costacurta, Roberto Ayala, Enzo Francescoli, Jean-Pierre Papin, Christian Vieri and Ivan Zamorano.

They are due to take on a Russian team managed by Chechen president Ramzan Kadyrov.

McManaman told talkSPORT: “Someone’s asked us to play but I’ve been away the last four or five days.

“I spoke to Luis Figo and he’s playing in the game.

“I’m trying to find out as much info as possible before I decide whether to go – it’s being dealt with through an Argentinean company.”

According to the Daily Mail, the people in charge of arranging the game were thinking of trying to get Manchester City, Barcelona or Juventus as opposition for the game, with the Turin-based club having turned down a payment of around £1million to turn up.
