Kenya: Awendo Set to Host the Safaricom 10 KM Road Race This Friday

The third edition of the Safaricom Awendo 10km road race has attracted another big field of experienced runners. More than 400 athletes are expected to compete in the race this Friday in Awendo town, the first of the three-race Nyanza South Road Race Tour which will proceed to Rongo and Migori later.

Nyanza South AK Chairman Peter Angwenyi said confirmations have come from Commonwealth Games Marathon silver medallist Irene Mogaka, Gladys Otero, who won in Awendo and Migori last year and Merceline Ondieki, who won in Rongo last year. Other star athletes who will race in Awendo are Jane Onyangi, Jackline Nyangeri and Eunice Machogu. Runners from Sigogwet, Korusei, Olenguruone, Bomet, North Rift, Kapsabet, Nyahururu, Ngong’, Nyamira and Kisii will show up for the popular annual event. Among the men expected is two-time winner in Awendo DeKlerk Omari, John Segei, Paul Kirui and Benson Ole Nakei from TransMara who won the 10,000m race at the second AK/NBK Weekend Meeting in Narok last month. Said Salim and marathoner Boaz Mayaka from Nyamira are also expected to give the youth a run for their money. The race has been dubbed ‘Run for Dear Health’ to help fight anti-social activities like substance abuse and idleness.
