Former Australia fly-half Mark Ella has claimed a hybrid version of rugby union and league can be a success.
A trial game, using the rules of both codes, is set to held Down Under on Wednesday when St Augustines College (Sydney) and Keebra Park HS (Gold Coast) meet at Brookvale Oval.
The rules will centre around which half the attacking team is in. If the attacking team are in their own half, then the game will be played to league rules – with the game switching to union laws when they enter the opposition half.
And Ella, who has been one of the people working on the rules, believes that the hybrid game could be the future of rugby – although neither the Australian Rugby Union nor the National Rugby League have sanctioned the trial.
“I must admit when this was first bandied about a number of years ago I was pretty sceptical,” Ella told Fox Sports.
“But I’ve been involved with it for a little while now, I’ve watched a couple of trial games in Queensland and to my amazement I think it can work.”
