Jose Mourinho’s team were knocked out at the semifinal stage of the Champions League by the Catalan giants 3-1 on aggregate as they had lost the first-leg 2-0 at the Santiago Bernabeu last week.
Like the encounter in Madrid, the match at Barcelona too had moments of controversy as Gonzalo Higuain’s goal for the capital club was ruled out and Madrid players complained of the decision.
However, Alves, who was at the center of the Pepe red card row last week, believes that Madrid should know better than to complain, pointing out that they themselves did not begrudge their Copa del Rey triumph last month.
“After the final of the Copa del Rey which Madrid won 1-0, we accepted the result because they scored one more goal than us,” the Brazil international right-back told reporters. “That is the difference between Barca and other clubs.”
Expressing his jubilation at reaching the final of the Champions League, Alves enthused: “Football had awarded us.”
Barcelona last reached the final of Europe’s premier club competition in 2008-09 when they defeated Manchester United 2-0. The Catalan giants are eight points clear at the top of the table in the Primera Division and are set to win their third successive league title.
