South African National Editors' Forum (Johannesburg) 3 May 2011 press release As the South African media celebrates Press Freedom Day – May 3, the 20th anniversary of the signing of the Windhoek Declaration which calls on states in Africa to uphold and maintain  press freedom  – journalists in the country are facing an erosion of press freedom. Parliament is pressing ahead with the Protection of Information Bill which when enacted will enable national, provincial or local governments to declare secret a wide range of information which if published could result in the person responsible for the publication, an editor, journalist or a citizen, being imprisoned for a period which in some instances could be for up to 25 years. The current deadline date for this Bill is June 24, 2011.

Beletweyne — At least 6 people, mainly combatants, have been confirmed dead and scores more injured after fighters loyal to Shabelle Valley administration and Al shabaab fighters clashed in parts of Beletweyne town in Hiran region in central Somalia.

Mohammed Nur Agajof, the minister of information for Shabelle Valley administration said in an interview with Shabelle Media their fighters have come under attacks from Al shabaab.

He noted that they repulsed their offensive killing more fighters and injuring a number of others.

Mr. Agajof noted that efforts and military plans are under way to dislodge Al shabaab fighters from Hiran region completely.

Al shabaab has not released any comments about the fighting so far.
