Luis Suarez believes that Liverpool must aim to finish ahead of Tottenham and qualify for the Europa League.

The Reds began the season in ignominious fashion and fell into the relegation zone, before rising up to a mid-table position under Roy Hodgson. But the appointment of Kenny Dalglish as manager has seen the Merseysiders rise to fifth in the table, above Spurs – although Harry Redknapp’s men have a game in hand.

There had been suggestions that the lack of hype surrounding the Europa League when compared to the Champions League may see teams consider it as a blessing in disguise if they failed to qualify for Europe.

But despite a potential fixture pile-up, Suarez remains resolute that the aim for the club is to play and win a European tournament next season.

“If we get in the Europa League, of course, our objective has to be to win it. That is what a club like this must aim for,” he told reporters.

“We have to do everything we can to win as many competitions as we can. Qualifying for Europe has to be our objective.

“When I came I wanted to help Liverpool get there. But when the second half of the season started it looked really difficult.

“But we have kept winning games, we have played really well and got some important victories. We have been hoping that Tottenham drop points.”
