According to the constituency chairman, Anthony Avorgbedor, the about 15 protestors hijacked the ceremony and six of them took the microphone from the constituency election committee chairman, George Ahiable, who was about to present the candidate to the delegates.
The men overturned the high table and scattered the food prepared for delegates, leading to the abrupt end of the ceremony.
The constituency treasurer, Mr. Vidzreku, was also attacked in his house and part of the money to be given to delegates taken away from him by the protestors. The second vice chairman, who wanted to intervene, was reported to have been beaten up.
The delegates have therefore called on the regional and national executives to intervene and ensure that the constituency got a more preferred candidate that the party members were ready to support to secure victory in 2012.
Mr. Enam Hadzide described the situation as unfortunate and alleged that the actions of the protestors were orchestrated by the former Volta Regional Minister, Kofi Dzamesi. In spite of the brouhaha over his candidature, Enam Hadzide told DAILY GUIDE he considered himself as the parliamentary candidate for the Ketu-North NPP.
The chairman, Anthony Avorgbedor, told Daily Guide that the position of the protestors did not reflect that of the entire delegates.
He added that Enam was the only one who filed for nomination and so the constituency had no choice but to accept and rally round him to bring the NPP back into power next year. He noted that the regional executives would be duly notified.
When contacted, the regional chairman, Kenwuud Nurworsu, described the development as worrying but advised members to exercise restraint.
He also assured them that all parties and stakeholders in the matter would be engaged in dialogue, in consultation with the national executives, to resolve the impasse.
Some Provisional Results
All the 23 constituencies in the Volta region had their elections or acclamations except Ho West where the acclamation ceremony was held yesterday due to late arrival of money for the exercise.
All the candidates who emerged victorious after the exercise in the region were males except two who were females. They are Millicent Emefa Kwartey of Hohoe North and Janet Obro- Adido of Hohoe South.
In the Ho Central Constituency, 435 out of the expected 610 delegates turned up for the voting.
The candidate for the last general elections, Dr. Archibald Letsa, was maintained as he polled 372 votes as against 62 votes by Ronald Fiakpui, who is a marine instructor and the assembly member of Taviefe-Deme Electoral area.
A 62-year-old accountant, Daniel Dickson Dzokpe, went unopposed in the Ho East Constituency, which is under the Adaklu-Anyigbe district.
The situation was no different in the Ho West, as Ernest Yao Gaewu was unanimously endorsed by delegates. In Hohoe-North, Marlon Praise Anipa, who had 167 votes, lost to Janet Obro- Adido who polled 291 votes.
In North Dayi, 514 delegates voted out of the expected 621. Kenneth Anku, who gave Akua Sena Dansua a run for her money in the 2008 elections, won with 371 votes while Theodora Kudzi trailed with 143 votes. Ameyibor Freeman is representing the NPP in the South Dayi.
Out of the three candidates in the Akan constituency, Harry Afrim Darko won the slot with 214 votes while Mohammed Baba Salisu and Dr. Zida Akpe polled 104 and 122 votes respectively.
A teacher, John Thasun, lost to Charles Tetteh, a lawyer, in the Nkwanta South race.
Mr. Thasun had 147 while Mr. Tetteh had 289 votes, with four rejected ballots.
In Nkwanta North, the delegates endorsed Joseph Kweku Nayan, the only NPP parliamentarian in the region.
Daniel Kosina had 465 votes to emerge winner ahead of his female contender, Comfort Attah who polled 87 votes for Biakoye.
For Krachi East, Charles Jatoh lost to Patrick Jilima.
Osei Nti Douglas is representing the NPP in Krachi-West while Francis Asuka Boakye will also be representing the party in the Buem.
In Volta south, Alex Vordzorgbe bagged 151 votes to win the slot ahead of Seth Agbagidi who managed 84 votes in Keta.
An assembly member, Makafui Wanya, who has been elected for the third consecutive time, was unanimously endorsed by the delegates in the Anlo Constituency.
Godwin Kofi Nkuawu and Nicholas Mawunyega won the slot in Ketu-South and North-Tongu respectively.
Moore Zonrah won the delegates over in Central-Tongu, with Leo Kwaku Baanjo-Klogo winning in South-Tongu.
Another candidate who was unanimously endorsed was the Ave-Avenor parliamentary aspirant, Leo-Nelson Adzidogah.
The regional chairman, Kenwuud Nurworsu, expressed concern about the incidents of rejected ballots in the region’s NPP parliamentary primaries.
He said the number of rejected ballots, even though marginal, was worrying because “little drops of water make a mighty ocean.” He noted that in the 2012 elections, the NPP could not afford to lose votes on the basis of rejected ballots, which he said contributed to the misfortunes of the party in the 2008 elections.
He therefore admonished delegates, party members, sympathizers and all other electorates to ensure they properly handle the ballot papers.
