Nairobi Star (Nairobi) William Njuguna And Iaaf 2 May 2011 Defending champion, Edna Kiplagat will return for another title tilt at the women's New York Marathon title with past winners American Meb Keflezighi and Ethiopian Gebre Gebremariam also drafted for the November 6 event. Kiplagat, 31, continued success after her maiden World Marathon Majors race victory by taking second place at the New York City Half in March in a time of 1:09:00 and finishing third at the Virgin London Marathon running a career best of 2:20:46. She is also in line for a call-up to the national team for Daegu World Championships as Kenya seeks to produce another marathon winner at the biennial event since Catherine Nderaba's second victory at the 2007 edition in Osaka."For now, competing for Kenya in Daegu and defending my New York title are my priorities for the season

International athlete Philemon Gitai of Eldoret won the Great Mathioya half marathon in style at Rurii stadium. Gitai who has participated in London, France and Netherlands marathon, made a dramatic powerful kicks at the close of the race to clock 1:02:26. His closest competitor was Michael Mutai from Molo who covered the course in a personal best 1:02:58. Daniel Muriuki was third, clocking 1:03:21 on his first time at a road race.

In the women’s category MaryAnn Wangari, 18, from Nyeri clinched the top position in 1:12:44, followed by Monicah Ndiritu (1:15:22) and Monicah Muthoni (1:15:52).

In the 10 km category Kipkorir Kirui, 18, of Molo won in 31:54:32 to record his first victory at the distance. He normally runs in the in the 5,000m category. Rotich Bernard also from Molo came second in 31:54:73 followed by defending title holder Francis Kamiri from Kangema (32:18:07). Beatrice Mutai won the women’s race in 36:28 minutes followed by Grace Kimani from Kiriani Girls High school who clocked 39:02 while Caroline Muthoni of Gachika secondary school was third in 40:31 minutes.
