New Democrat (Monrovia)
2 May 2011
George Weah’s tortuous quest for the presidency ended in tears over the weekend when he conceded that ‘leadership comes with responsibility’ and bowed to Winston Tubman, nephew of late President William V. S. Tubman, the ruler who led this country for 27 unbroken years under a de facto one party state, making him the country’s longest serving leader.
The retired football icon, favorite of the urban poor, mainly the youths, could not hold back those flowing tears at his Congress for Democratic Change’s (CDC’s) 3-day convention in Kakata, where he received 111 votes, compared to Tubman’s 118 votes, thereby, making him take second place as the vice presidential candidate in what many believe was an orchestrated surrender.
He made no pretenses either, saying he was making the decision with a ‘heavy heart.’
In previous interviews, Mr. Weah had barked at the notion of being #2, ruling out any rumour that he was preparing to settle for second place.
But he told disgruntled followers that ‘politics is not static,’ meaning, he was now changing gear.
In further placating his followers, he said that the ‘CDC is my greatest job.’
Weah said, ‘Life is dynamic, and not static. There are variables, flexibility, hard work because power and freedom come with responsibility.”
