Sunderland defender Phil Bardsley has revealed he and his team-mates want the season to end now, after enduring an awful run which has seen the Black Cats take only four points out of a potential 33.

The North East side have endured a steep decline in form of late, which saw them drop dramatically towards the drop zone.

But despite Saturday’s 3-0 defeat to Fulham and a dire injury situation – Steve Bruce was unable to call upon a single recognised striker at the weekend – they look set to beat relegation thanks to a positive and successful start to the campaign.

Although Bardsley admits the season cannot come to an end any sooner he also insists the Black Cats should still push to finish in the top 10.

“There’s a part of us that would just like the season to end now,” the 25-year-old said.

“Our aim was always to finish in the top 10, but we’re going to have to dig deep if we’re going to do that.

“For all our endeavour and hard work, particularly in the first half, you still need to score if you’re going to win matches.

“To make things worse, we’ve given away silly goals.

“It’s up to the whole of the side to step up to the plate now and come up with a way of scoring.”
