Nine journalists from Mwananchi Communications Limited (MCL) have been nominated for the final lap of Excellence in Journalism Awards (EJAT) contest organised by Media Council of Tanzania (MCT).

The MCL nominees have qualified in 16 different categories. Three are from English newspaper, The Citizen, and the rest writing for Swahili language Mwananchi newspaper.

The Citizen Chief reporter, Lucas Liganga, was nominated in Malaria reporting category, while Mr Bernard James, a court reporter, was nominated in good governance category.

Other reporters, writing for Mwananchi Newspaper, included Leon Bahati who was appointed in Malaria category; Tumaini Msowoya in reporting people with disability; Florence Majani in Gender; and Lilian Lugakingira and Sheilla Sezzy in health issues.

The nominees also include two cartoonists: Rashid Kagusa for Mwananchi, and Samuel Mwamkinga for The Citizen.

Announcing the shortlisted yesterday in Dar es Salaam, acting Executive Secretary of MCT, Mr John Mireny said the finalists were obtained after a “rigorous work” by the panel of distinguished judges.

The judges scrutinised 437 entries submitted for contesting in 16 categories. The winners in each category would be drawn from among those nominees, and announced at a gala night to be held at Mlimani City Conference centre on Tuesday.
