Abuja — The Flying Eagles of Nigeria yesterday defeated Cameroon 3-2 to win the African Youth Championship in South Africa for the sixth time.
Olarenwaju Kayode opened score for the flying Eagles in the 74th minute, while Uche Nwofor scored a penalty to make it two, thereby finishing as the top scorer in the tournament.
But a bizarre four minutes in the 82 minute saw the Cameroonians’ scoring two goals, thereby dragging the game to extra-time. Substitute Terry Envoh scored the winner in extra time to seal victory for Nigeria.
The game thus ended with no further development, handing Nigeria their sixth title and breaking the Cameroonian jinx at last. Nigeria won the AYC in 1983, 1985, 1987, 1989 and 2005.
Meanwhile, Egypt finished third after defeating Mali 1-0 in the third-place play-off in Johannesburg.
Champions Nigeria, Cameroon, Egypt and Mali will fly the continent’s flag in South America in the Under 20 World Cup scheduled to hold in Columbia from July 29. Ghana, the defending Champions of the World Cup failed to qualify this time for the Mundial.
