Frankfurt — The Bundesliga flavour could be coming to Kenya at the end of the European football season this summer.
According to Kay Dammholz, the vice president sales and audiovisuals rights of DFL Sports Enterprises, the marketing arm of the Bundesliga (German football league), the league body was working on bringing a couple of teams to Nairobi to play in a competition.
“We are working together with Supersport and will know by the end of this season if we will send a team or two to Kenya,” Dammholz said yesterday in Frankfurt where the German Football League (DFL) is based.
DFL owns and runs the Bundesliga and Bundesliga 2, the two top football leagues in Germany.
The DFL Sports Enterprise official said the Bundesliga was the second highest watched league in the world after the NFL and last season attracted 17.4 million spectators to the stadium translating to an average of 41,802 fans per match.
Dammholz said Bundesliga was keen to show its quality to the rest of the world.
Broadcast live
The Bundesliga is considered one of the best managed in Europe and is currently broadcast live across 198 countries.
It is seeking to overtake the worldwide popularity of the Barclays Premier League.
Dammholz was speaking during a workshop organized by Bundesliga for Kenyan sports journalists on the inner operations of the league.
Bundesliga has signed a four-year deal with South Africa pay satellite television Supersport running upto 2014 to broadcast live matches in sub-Sahara Africa.
In addition, Supersport will show preview shows of the league, a Bundesliga magazine show and features on African players in German.
Some of the better known German clubs in the league are Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, Hamburg, Eintracht Frankfurt, FC Koln and Stuttgart.
The DFL recorded a turnover of Euros 2.08 billion during the 2009-2010 season.
