Everton defender Leighton Baines insists Wigan can still win their fight to stay in the Premier League.
Baines, who left Wigan in the summer of 2007 for a fee of £6 million, scored from the penalty spot 12 minutes from time after Hugo Rodallega was judged to have handled the ball in the box.
The game finished 1-1, leaving Roberto Martinez’s side in the Premier League drop zone with only three games to play this season, although Baines believes they have enough to stay up.
“What it meant to score wasn’t in my mind – but about five seconds later it dawned on me,” the left-back said.
“You just have to step up and do your job. My loyalties lie with Everton, nobody else.
“Wigan still mean a lot to me because of what they did for me as a young lad coming through. I am very grateful for that.
“I hope the penalty won’t end up carrying too much weight and they will be fine. They showed they have enough about them.”
