Bacary Sagna admits to being embarrassed by Arsenal’s trophy drought

Arsenal defender Bacary Sagna has admitted that he feels embarrassed by the club’s trophy drought, and has apologised to their supporters.

The Gunners last lifted silverware when they won the FA Cup in 2005 in a penalty shoot-out against Manchester United.

But since then, the north London club have been unable to add to their list of honours, with  criticism increasingly being levelled against manager Arsene Wenger and his reluctance to spend big in the transfer market.

However, Sagna insists that it is not the manager but the players who are to blame for not having won anything of consequence in the past six years.

“It’s embarrassing to be part of a team that hasn’t won a trophy for six years,” Sagna told The News of the World.

“We failed. It’s not the manager’s fault, it’s the players.

“Some people say Arsene Wenger’s not doing well, but he doesn’t play. Everyone was sad at Bolton. We have to be stronger in battle, that’s what we said after the game last Sunday.

“We know we are not a bad team. We have the quality to finish first, but we lost. This is the fault of the players – we have failed.

“We have to say sorry to the fans and to the manager because they have supported us all season.”

Sagna also admits that he will not be surprised if Cesc Fabregas chooses to leave Arsenal in favour of winning trophies elsewhere, the midfielder having been heavily linked with a move to Barcelona.

“I’ll understand if Cesc leaves,” he said. “He has been here at Arsenal for a long time and he wants to win trophies.

“As professionals, we want to be successful and want to win cups and titles, but we haven’t won a thing for six years.”
