Gavin Rees won the WBA world light-welterweight title in 2007
Former WBA world light-welterweight champion Gavin Rees is set to fight unbeaten Irishman Andy Murray for the European lightweight title.
The Welshman relinquished his British belt to have nose surgery in February as Anthony Crolla beat John Watson to the domestic title in Liverpool.
Purse bids to stage Rees against Murray close on Tuesday for the summer show.
Rees’ stable-mate Bradley Pryce will, meanwhile, fight Siarhei Rabchenka for the WBA Intercontinental title.
The former Commonwealth champion will clash with the unbeaten Belarusian in a light middleweight title fight on 20 May on a Ricky Hatton Promotion in Chester.
Rees, though, hopes to fight for the European title in his home-land – possibly back in Cardiff for the first time since he lost his WBA world title to Andriy Kotelnik in March 2008.
The 30-year-old, who has lost just once in 35 professional fights, is the mandatory challenger for the European belt and will hope to end 28-year-old Murray’s 24-fight unbeaten record.
The date and venue of the forthcoming European title showdown are set to be decided this week.
