Ancelotti admits lucky break

Chelsea manager Carlo Ancelotti was happy to admit his side had been lucky in beating Tottenham.

The Italian gave an honest assessment of the game following the final whistle, not wanting to hide from the fact that key decisions had gone the way of his side in the 2-1 win.

The experienced boss looked on from the touchline as Frank Lampard’s shot squirmed through the legs of Heurelho Gomes and was deemed to have crossed the line by the referee’s assistant.

Despite admitting his side had benefited from errors, Ancelotti remained philosophical and conceded that until something is done to change the rules, controversial decisions remain part and parcel of football.

“We did our job and our job was to win. I think that to be honest we were lucky because some decisions were good for us but this is football,” he told Sky Sports.

“We are happy for this result and the performance today.

“The spirit in the game also, when we were 1-0 down and then in the second half, was very good.”

Debate

Echoing the calls of his managerial counterpart Harry Redknapp, Ancelotti admitted that technology could be utilised to help out the officials with tough decisions.

Despite sympathising with the position of Tottenham, the result now leaves Chelsea in striking distance of league leaders Manchester United as a meeting between the two sides looms large.

“You see on the television but unfortunately the referee doesn’t have a television and I think that tech for the goal could be a good decision,” he added.

“It was not an easy decision in my opinion. We were lucky. A lot of the time we are unlucky with the decision of the referee.

“I think everyone has to accept this and I listened to Harry Redknapp speak and he is a football man. Obviously he was disappointed but he understood that this is football.”
