Umuahia — Chief Onyema Ugochukwu, the former Chairman  of Niger Delta Development Commission, says the Igbo will be justified to go for the presidency in 2015. Ugochukwu said in Umuahia that the unity and resolve of the South East was the biggest lesson of 2011 polls,  adding “We made a decision to vote for President Goodluck Jonathan and we voted massively and overwhelmingly.” “It was a strong message, the tribe represented in every part of the country was not tied to the South East alone.” Ugochukwu expressed the hope that the race would use the new found unity to leverage and reposition itself in the country’s politics, stressing that disunity made the tribe to lose its pride of place in the country. “Our new found strength in 2011 polls will get us there,’’ he said.

A total of 36 people were killed in this month’s National Assembly and Presidential elections, according to an investigation by Saturday Vanguard.

Forty-two others were injured.

Nine of the casualties were NYSC members deployed as electoral officers.
They are:

*Adewumi Seun, B.Sc. Social Sciences (Ekiti)

Their death has provoked outrage across the land. Many Nigerians say the human losses cannot be quantified in any way.

Apart from the NYSC members who were killed by hoodlums protesting the outcome of the presidential election the other victims, according to security reports, died while either fighting for candidates in the election, or engaging in thuggery or snatching of ballot boxes in Delta, Bauchi, Nasarawa, Imo, Oyo, Ekiti, Kaduna, Katsina, Borno, Sokoto and Kano.

Twelve of the victims lost their lives in the North West Zone; eight in each of North East and South-South; four in South West and the remaining four in South East and North Central.

The human losses, for obvious reasons, have overshadowed the plight of hundreds of people who have been displaced from their homes by the riots in the North, and the disruption to social and economic lives in those areas.
Reports from Kano, Bauchi, and Kaduna say a lot of people are still taking refuge in police and army barracks in those places for fear of fresh riots.

Those who want to flee to their home states are afraid of being attacked on the highway. The curfew in the affected states has made life tough for residents who can not conduct their businesses at their convenience.

Some state governments have had to evacuate their NYSC members home from Kano, Bauchi and Gombe states.
Some of the NYSC members have vowed never to return to those states for the completion of their national service.
Some parents are calling for the review of the scheme.
