FORMER Amavubi Stars captain Olivier Karekezi has been listed as the country’s highest paid footballer.

According to soccerlens.com, the former APR star, who now plies his trade at Sweden’s Osters FC, earns $52,000 (Rwf30.9m) a year.

Across the region, Burundi’s Saidi Ntibazonkiza who plays for MKS Cracovia in Poland earns a $315,000 (Rwf187.425m) while Djibouti’s Ismail Ahmed Kadar Hassan who features for Slovakia’s F.K. Dunajska Streda rakes in $51,500 (Rwf30.6m) a year.

Somalia’s Abdisalam Ibrahim who plays for England’s second division side Scunthorpe earns $340,000 (Rwf202.3m) while Kenya’s McDonald Mariga (Inter Milan) earns $1,300,000 (Rwf773.5m).

On the continent, Ivory Coast and Manchester City’s Yaya Toure still tops the list with $18,200,000 (Rwf10.8bn) a year.

Cristiano Ronaldo is the highest paid footballer in the world with a staggering $19.5 million annual wage bill.
