Plateau State Governor, Mr. Jonah Jang, was in the early hours of Thursday declared the winner of the governorship election in the state.
Jang, of the Peoples Democratic Party defeated his closest rival and Deputy Governor, Mrs. Pauline Tallen, of the Labour Party with 823,536 to 494,975 votes. Chris Giwa of the Action Congress of Nigeria polled 42,897 votes, while a former Sports Minister, Mr. Damishi Sango of the All Nigeria Peoples Party scored 28,723 votes.
The results of the elections were announced by the Returning Officer, who is also the Vice Chancellor of the University of Jos, Prof. Sonny Tyoden.
Also, Jang’s predecessor, Chief Joshua Dariye, of the Labour Party won the Plateau Central senatorial election. He defeated Dr. Dawuda Gowon, the younger brother of a former head of state, Gen Yakubu Gowon of the PDP. Dariye won in three of the five local government areas in the zone with a margin of over 11, 000 while Gowon won two.
In Plateau South and North, PDP’s Victor Lar and incumbent Gyang Dantong won. While Lar defeated Generals Jeremial Useni and John Shagaya, Dantong defeated Lumumba Da Adeh of the LP.
In the rescheduled House of Representatives election, Mr. Peter Akuja of the PDP was declared the winner in Jos North/Bassa Constituency while a former speaker, Mr. Emmanuel Go’ar of the PDP won in Pankshin/Kanke/Kanam Federal Constituency. In the House of Assembly election, PDP won 18 of the 24 seats while the LP won six.
