East Africa: Second VP to Grace EA Netball Tourney

Zanzibar — ZANZIBAR Second Vice-President Ambassador Seif Ali Iddi is expected to grace the opening ceremony of this year’s East Africa netball championship this afternoon at the Gymkhana ground, Maisara in the isles.

The Zanzibar Amateur Netball Association, CHANEZA Acting Secretary General Rahima Bakari said on Thursday that preparations to host the regional championships that will climax on May 5th are complete.

“Fortunately we have managed to complete preparations for the tournament well, thanks to the Zanzibar Government through its ministry responsible for sports for supporting the event,” Rahima told the ‘Daily News.’

She mentioned that 14 teams from: Zambia (women), Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania mainland and hosts Zanzibar had confirmed to participate and that teams of ladies and men from Uganda and Kenya were expected to be in Zanzibar by Friday.

The CHANEZA official named the home teams, from Zanzibar as JKU, Mafunzo, Polisi and Chipkizi, while those from mainland are Polisi – Morogoro, JKT and Jeshi Stars.

The home teams will challenge teams from Uganda, Kenya and Zambia’s Green Star. However, she said it was unfortunate that until yesterday the Zambian team was still hunting for funds to enable it fly to Zanzibar.
