Alexander Hleb admits failing performances for Birmingham City

Alexander Hleb has issued an apology to Birmingham City for his inconsistent performances during his loan spell this season.

The Belarusian has suffered a stuttering campaign due to injuries following his arrival from Barcelona in the summer.

The midfielder, who turns 30 on Sunday, admitted he has displayed his full potential for Alex McLeish’s side but has praised the club and its fans for their support.

“I haven’t shown everything that I know I can and I’m sorry for that. I wanted to give more but I can’t change what happened,” Hleb told reporters.

“But I have enjoyed my time, it’s been a new experience here in Birmingham for me.

“I fully respect the fans and every single player because these people have done a lot for me.”

“Winning the cup this year was just unbelievable. At Wembley the atmosphere was incredible.

“I didn’t play but I still enjoyed every minute supporting our fans and our team.”

“I want to say a thank you to everybody linked to Birmingham City. I have been given the opportunity to understand the big history of this good club, I’ve learned a lot.

Birmingham face another vital game in the relegation run-in on Sunday as they host Mick McCarthy’s Wolves.

Hleb is adamant McLeish’s men possess the ability required to beat the drop and has hinted that obtaining three points comes before putting in an eye-pleasing performance.

“We want to stay in the Premier League. I don’t care what happens in the game on Sunday and how we do it but we need to win against Wolves,” said Hleb.

“I believe 100 per cent that we will stay the Premier League. We’re good enough to stay and play in this division.

“It’s both the players and the manager that we have here that makes me believe that.

“The manager gives his belief to this team and, when you feel that confidence when he speaks, then that can only help the team.

“He knows we’re good enough and of course so does everybody else.”

“It is a very important game. It’s my birthday and if we win it will be the best present for me. I’ll be doing everything to make sure that happens.”
