Wayne Rooney has revealed via Twitter that he has been the victim of apparent phone hacking after Scotland Yard detectives visited his home.
The Manchester United striker tweeted: “Scotland Yard detectives came to see me earlier and showed me some documents, looks like a newspaper have hacked into my phone #Bigsurprise”.
The 25-year-old becomes the latest high-profile public figure to have been an alleged victim of phone hacking following people such as Andy Gray and actress Sienna Miller.
The investigation centres on the use of technology to gain information from calls and messages from the victim’s phone.
The Metropolitan Police are now investigating the case further and The Guardian reports that Rooney and agent Paul Stretford are considering whether to take action against the perpetrators.
The news comes just days after United’s triumph in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final clash with Schalke when Rooney was at his fluent best, setting up the first goal and scoring the second in a 2-0 victory in Germany.
