Namibia: Hailstorm Wipes Out Crops

28 April 2011 Results of Tuesday's governorship election held in 24 states of the federation came in torrents Tuesday, with 12 sitting governors confirmed re-elected by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). Eight new governors were also elected, while results from three states were pending and one state inconclusive. The sitting governors who were returned are Theodore Orji (Abia), Sullivan Chime (Enugu), Babatunde Fashola (Lagos), Godswill Akpabio (Akwa Ibom), Rotimi Amaechi (Rivers), Martin Elechi (Ebonyi), Babangida Aliyu (Niger), Gabriel Suswam (Benue), Saidu Dakingari (Kebbi), Ibrahim Shema (Katsina) and David Jonah Jang (Plateau).

A hailstorm destroyed crops and killed livestock in the Outapi, Onesi and Ruacana constituencies of the Omusati Region last Monday, leaving people worried about their food supplies.

According to the regional councillors of these constituencies, the hail destroyed mahangu, mealies, beans and vegetable crops and even a number of goats and sheep.

Bigger animals such as cattle and donkeys were left with wounded eyes, noses and ears.

The hailstorm also destroyed the grazing around the affected villages.

Local people said they had never seen such a heavy hailstorm with such large hailstones.

Outapi councillor Tataati Shileka said the affected villages are not in a flood-prone area and farmers had cultivated a lot of mahangu that could also feed those affected by the floods.

“Many of these people affected by this hailstorm are now facing starvation and will definitely need government support,” Shileka said.
