Wayne Rooney has admitted that his attempt to leave Manchester United earlier in the season was a huge mistake and is grateful to the Old Trafford faithful for supporting him ever since.
It had looked likely that the England striker was going to leave the Red Devils after handing in a transfer request, but he performed a dramatic u-turn by signing a new deal with the club.
Rooney told The Mirror: “When I look back at it now, how wrong was I? Obviously, I understand I made a mistake.
“I admitted that and I apologised for that. I’ve wanted to try to prove myself all over again to the United fans. I feel I’m doing that now.
“Hopefully, now I’m helping this team to be successful. It would be a great end to the season to be in a Champions League final and to win the title.
“I’m very grateful to the fans for supporting me and I’m delighted with my form again.
“I hope that I’m proving myself through my displays. I’m 100 per cent committed to this club.”
He continued: “We’re one step closer to the Champions League final, and in a strong position in the Premier League.
“We’re in a great position to get to the final and we’re hoping to stay focused to get the job done at Old Trafford next week.
“To get back to a final so soon after that one we lost in Rome would be a great achievement for us.
“In 2009, we were just beaten by a better team in Barcelona.
“They were a lot better than us on the night and deserved the victory. Sometimes you just have to hold your hands up.”
