The 25-year-old has long been linked with a move to Old Trafford and put in a performance that clearly impressed the United boss, making numerous saves until Ryan Giggs finally breached the deadlock after 67 minutes.
Speaking to Sky Sports after the game, the Scot paid tribute to the goalkeeper and his heroics at the Veltins-Arena.
“I think, we know that Neuer is going to Bayern Munich but he was fantastic, it’s one of the best performances I have seen against Manchester United,” said Ferguson.
“I think the concentration and intensity of our play, the speed of our passing was absolutely excellent tonight. It was a really, really top performance.
“For me, when Chicharito scored when he was offside, that told the players they could beat this goalkeeper Neuer and of course then Ryan Giggs scored and it’s a marvellous result.”
The result puts the Red Devils in pole position to secure a place in the Champions League final against either Real Madrid and Barcelona, and Sir Alex insisted he felt his side were peaking at the right time.
“The continuity of selection in these games gives me a good foundation, we have good experience and a good work rate and I’ve good got options because Nani could have played but Valencia’s form showed why he’s played,” he explained.
“We’ve got selection problems now but that’s what we want we’ve got important games coming up. There’ll be a different team against Arsenal on Sunday but hopefully we’ll get a result.
“Obviously the way I’m going to look at it, I’m going to get Sunday’s game over with with, that’s a very important game for us now.
“Depending on the result on Sunday, I could make two or three changes for the second leg because of Chelsea, the following Sunday.
“It’s a seven day period that’s crucial for the club but they are the kind of games the players are relishing and I think we’re coming to a peak.”
