Washington DC — The United Nations Genocide Chief, Ambassador Francis Deng may soon be in Nigeria to assess the extent of the killings that happened in some parts of the north.

A top official of the United Nations who spoke to our correspondent on condition of anonymity said that the world body was not pleased with the rate of killings and loss of properties worth millions of Naira in some parts of Nigeria over the outcome of the April 16th Presidential election.

Our source continued that all arrangements have been made by the United Nations to hasten the visit of its Special Envoy on Genocide, to Nigeria.

The official noted that the United Nations was very interested in Nigeria having a successful transition programme and added that this was the reason the world body wanted to find a lasting solution to the political killings threatening the country’s democracy.

He further said that top government officials in Abuja have been contacted by the United Nations genocide officials in connection with the visit and stressed that all plans regarding the trip have been concluded.

The United Nations Special Adviser on the Prevention of Genocide who was supposed to be on a United Nations fact-finding visit to Nigeria and some other West African States, at the instance of the Secretary-General of the World body in last year, cancelled the Nigerian

leg of the trip following the political developments that led to the dissolution of that country’s former Cabinet.

Meanwhile, the United States Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs, Ambassador Johnnie Carson will, on Friday brief the White House Correspondents on his assessment on the 2011 elections in Nigeria.
