BuaNews (Tshwane) Chris Bathembu 27 April 2011 Pretoria — President Jacob Zuma says South Africans are better off since the country marked its first democratic elections in 1994. Zuma addressed scores of people who had descended on the lawns of the Union Buildings in Pretoria to mark this year's Freedom Day celebrations. Earlier, Tshwane Mayor Sputla Ramokgopa opened the celebrations calling on South Africans to remember 1994 as a year that marked the beginning of a just and prosperous South Africa

President Ellen Johnson is among several African and other world leaders participating in festivities marking the 50th Independence anniversary of neighboring Sierra Leone.

The President, who left the country Wednesday morning, will return later during the day.

During the President’s one-day visit to Sierra Leone, Hon. Edward B. McClain, Jr., the Minister of State for Presidential Affairs will coordinate the affairs of government, in consultation with the Vice President, Honorable Joseph N. Boakai.
