An international athlete died in a road accident when his car rolled as he was returning to his home in Iten town. Peter Kiprotich Cherus was driving his saloon car when he lost control just after Tambach on a steep section of the Kabarnet-Iten road at about midnight.
Keiyo Police boss Joseph Ireri said the vehicle was discovered an hour after Kiprotich had left a local entertainment venue where he had met with colleagues. “It appears he was negotiating sharp corners along the route when his vehicle lost control and rolled several times landing in a ditch where he died on the spot,” said Ireri.
The athlete was heading to his home which is located near Iten Police station. People driving along the road on the same night saw the car in ditch and alerted the police who arrived to retrieve it. Kiprotich has been participating in international marathons.
Keiyo branch of Athletics Kenya led by chairman Daniel Komen mourned the death saying he was upcoming runner who was also a renowned businessman in the area. The body was taken to Moi Referral Hospital mortuary in Eldoret.
