The postmaster of the Katutura Post Office was released on bail of N$5 000 yesterday after spending almost a week and a half in Police custody on a charge of theft.
Postmaster Romess Bock (41) was arrested at the start of last week, after some N$300 000 allegedly disappeared from the Katutura Post Office. He made a first appearance in the Windhoek Magistrate’s Court in Katutura on a charge of theft on Tuesday last week, and remained in Police custody until he appeared in court for a second time yesterday.
With Bock’s second court appearance, a second accused, Aubrey Shipanga, was added to the case.
According to the charge sheet in the case, the two men are accused of stealing N$300 000 from Nampost’s Katutura branch on April 16.
With their appearance before Magistrate Conchita Olivier yesterday, Bock and Shipanga were granted bail of N$5 000 each. They have to appear in court again on June 17.
The magistrate warned them that after their release on bail they may not interfere with the Police investigation of their case and may not leave the district of Windhoek without the consent of the investigating officer.
Nampost is also launching an internal investigation into the alleged disappearance of the money, the parastatal’s regional manager in Windhoek, Geoffrey Bailey, said yesterday.
Bailey said according to information available to him, Bock initially reported a theft case to the Police, but was then himself arrested after the Police had started investigating the matter.
