Khumalo will aim to be fit again for the Nations Cup qualifier with Egypt

Bongani Khumalo’s loan spell at Preston North End has come to an end after the Bafana Bafana central defender had surgery on his injured foot on Tuesday.

The 24-year-old picked up the injury during Preston’s 4-0 defeat to Millwall in the Championship on Saturday.

Preston have now been relegated to League One and Khumalo has been ruled out for the rest of the season.

He will now aim to return in time for South Africa’s crucial African Nations Cup qualifier with Egypt in June.

Bafana Bafana will qualify for the tournament in Equatorial Guinea and Gabon in 2012 with victory in Cairo.

“He’ll be fine – it may take a bit of time to get back to full fitness after an operation but it’s not too serious,” his agent Glyn Binkin told BBC Sport.

“He definitely won’t play again this season but the experience of playing at Preston has been great for his game.”

Khumalo will recuperate at his parent club, Tottenham Hotspur of the English Premier League.

The former SuperSport United captain joined Preston in March and made six appearances, winning two and losing two.
