Prisons Men Fly to Cairo for Africa Tournament

Kenya Prisons men’s volleyball team leaves this morning for Cairo ahead of the CAVB championship that starts on Wednesday. Prisons, who finished top in the national league, will be joined by runners up General Service Unit who leave tomorrow.

According to Prisons head coach Gideon Chenje, the team will be hoping to improve on the fifth place finish attained last year in Tunisia. Chenje said the team is hoping to emulate the performance exhibited by the women’s team while winning the continental championships at the Africa Nazarene University two weeks ago. Kenya Pipeline were second in the women’s event. “The win by our female counterparts will be a great inspiration to the team although we are expecting very high standards of competition,” said Chenje.

Being Kenya’s main representative in the event, the team received the national flag from vice president Kalonzo Musyoka on Thursday. Kalonzo urged the team to emulate the women’s team in bringing pride to the prisons department and the country in general. “You finished fifth on your debut last year and I know you can do better this year since you now have the qualities and experience of winners,” said Musyoka. “I want you to put your eyes on the top prize.”

Chenje urged that the team has no injury worries and all players are raring to go as they hope to book a ticket to represent the continent in the world championships later this year. “We are determined to give our best shot in this event,” said Chenje.

Kenya Volleyball Federation secretary general Evans Wasike echoed Chenje’s sentiments adding that the team has had the best preparation in years and is expected to do well.
