The Zambia Amateur Boxing Federation (ZABF) has picked a provisional 19-member national team to represent the country at the 2011 All-Africa Games (AAG) in Mozambique in September and Commonwealth Youth Games (CYG) scheduled for United Kingdom later this year.
National team coach Wisdom Mudenda said initially, only 16 boxers were supposed to have been selected from the trials that were conducted at the Olympic Youth Development Centre (OYDC) but the ZABF board increased the number to 19.
Mudenda said in an interview at the weekend that the number of boxers was increased by three to provide cover in case some boxers got injured before the two tournaments.
He said the tournament was successful as it gave ZABF technical team the opportunity to identify the boxers that would represent the nation at AAG and CYG.
Mudenda appealed to the selected boxers not to relax but continue training hard and keep themselves fit for all international boxing duties, saying it was encouraging to see boxers exhibiting high levels of competitiveness.
Among those picked is Benny Muzibo, who knocked out Abel Lungu in the finals to win the middleweight category with Philimon Hara beating Charles Lumbwe 2-0 in a bantamweight bout.
Light welterweight Precious Makina got a walk-over after his opponent William Chikwa failed to show up due to injury.
In the preliminaries, Abraham Ng’andu knocked out Christopher Katanga in a flyweight fight, Bwalya Mwale was battered by Clifford Mukinga, forcing the referee to stop this middleweight match to prevent further bloodshed.
Charles Lumbwe beat Eddie Longwani in a bantamweight fight winning 3-0 with Dougals Banda pounding Sangu Zulu in a flyweight fight to win on splint point decision.
Other bouts saw William Chikwa beating Freezer Mkandawire, Hector Mutole hammered Emmanuel Kayabe in a lightweight fight winning 2-1 as Mashal Mulenga walloped Adrian Siyanga 3-0.
