Everton goalkeeper Tim Howard is confident his side will recover quickly from defeat against Manchester United on Saturday and end the Premier League season on a high.

David Moyes’ men defended stubbornly at Old Trafford in the face of considerable United pressure until the 83rd minute, when Javier Hernandez rose unmarked at the far post to head home the winner for the league leaders.

The nature of the defeat was particularly galling for Howard, who had earlier made several top-class saves to deny United a breakthrough.

However, the seven-game unbeaten run Everton were on prior to this setback leads the 28-year-old to believe his team-mates will not take long to get back to winning ways.

“It won’t be difficult to regain our momentum,” he told reporters.

“We are disappointed but have to put the result into perspective. We have to go to Wigan with the same confidence as we showed against United.

“We held them at bay for more than 80 minutes. OK, we didn’t do much attacking but we defended very well.

“We have to take the positives from this. We didn’t get any points but we can go to Wigan with our heads up and win.”

The United States international also paid tribute to the mentality of the Premier League’s big clubs, stating it is no coincidence they win so many matches courtesy of late goals.

He added: “It’s heartbreaking to lose late on. But against teams like United, Chelsea and Arsenal, I don’t know how many times I’ve been on the end of a late goal.

“You always expect United to score late on. When I was here, you just knew that the goal would come.”
