Marseille’s hopes of winning the French league title suffered a blow when their Cameroonian Stephane Mbia was ruled out of action for three weeks on Monday.
The groin injury means coach Didier Deschamps will be deprived of one of his best players for the title run-in.
The 24-year-old was taken off in the 7th minute of Saturday’s French League Cup final triumph over Montpellier.
Doctors say Mbia could potentially miss five of champion Marseille’s seven remaining league games.
“The news isn’t good,” said Marseille coach Didier Deschamps.
“He has muscular problems in the groin and I don’t think he’ll be able to come back before mid-May.”
Marseille are two points behind league leaders Lille, but has a game in hand and can go top if it beats Nice on Wednesday.
Marseille then plays Auxerre, title rival Lyon, Brest, and then Lorient on 15 May.
M’Bia is a crucial player in Deschamps’ team because he can play both as a holding midfielder, his favoured role, or fill in at centre-half as he did toward the end of last season.
