Joe Hart can become the most-capped English goalkeeper of all-time – former Manchester City stopper Joe Corrigan

Manchester City‘s goalkeeping legend Joe Corrigan has backed Joe Hart to become the most-capped England ‘keeper of all time.

Peter Shilton currently holds the record with 125 caps but Hart, who has established himself as Fabio Capello’s top choice choice in net, has picked up his 10th at the relatively tender goalkeeping age of 24.

Corrigan, who played 603 times for City and picked up nine caps for the Three Lions and has admitted that he was a little jealous that Hart had already overtaken his appearance record for the national side.

Speaking to BBC Radio Manchester, he said: “I was a little bit envious when he got past my total.

“He is a young boy with fantastic potential. I can only see him getting better and better.

“If he does he will be there for a very long time. He could go on and beat Peter Shilton’s record. If he keeps his feet on the ground, Joe has got a great chance.”

The former Shrewsbury man will travel to Ewood Park tonight as City look to consolidate their place in fourth against Blackburn and Corrigan has praised his form, particularly his performance against Manchester United at Wembley which Roberto Mancini’s side won 1-0.

He said: “Joe was absolutely brilliant as he has been all season.

“As a goalkeeper all you have to do is keep the ball out of the net. It’s that simple. If you come off with a clean sheet you have done your job.”
