Ghana U20 coach Orlando Wellington has launched an attack on the players he personally selected for the Africa Youth Championship saying they are not good enough.
The Black Satellites disgracefully exited the tournament by failing to win a match and failed to advance beyond the group phase.
The woeful performance in South Africa means Ghana U20 side meekly surrendered their Africa and World Cup titles.
Wellington was given the freehand by the Ghana Football Association to select his players and was given a training tour of Kenya ahead of the tournament.
The coach admits to Kickoffghana that the players picked for the tournament were not good enough even though he did that job of selecting them.
“I can say the players were not good enough over the three games. We tried everything and had our opportunities but it just did not happen,” Wellington .
Libya was scheduled to host the tournament but was moved at the last minute to South Africa because of the turmoil in the north African country.
Refusing to take any personal responsibility for the woeful showing of the team, Wellington also blamed the change in venue of the tournament.
“We were disturbed with the programme of changing the schedule which hurt our preparations and through that we lost some of the key players we wanted to bring here.”
The disastrous showing of the Black Satellites completes a terrible year for local coaches in Ghana after the country’s U17, U23, CHAN team and Women’s national team all desperately failed this year.
Despite concerns expressed by Ghana football fans that local coaches are letting the country down, Wellington says he is not bothered about the concerns.
“I am not worried at all. My concern is that Ghanaians had faith in this team. I am not bothered what people say about local coaches now. I don’t buy that. We lacked some key players and it affected the team a little bit.”
