David Vaughan pips Charlie Adam to Blackpool players’ player of the season award

Charlie Adam may have been nominated by the Football Writers’ Association as one of the best players in this season’s Premier League, but his Blackpool team-mates have voted for David Vaughan as their man of the season.

While Adam’s creativity and skill in the Blackpool midfield has attracted all the headlines and admiration from bigger clubs this year, it is Vaughan’s consistency and attitude alongside him which has won him the respect of his colleagues in the Broomfield Road dressing room.

Fellow midfielder Keith Southern told reporters: “He’s a fantastic little footballer. You look at him and there’s nothing of him, but he’s as tough as old boots.

“He puts his foot in, but he’s got a lot of class on the ball as well and a wonderful left foot. It’s a privilege to play with him and Charlie. I’d say Charlie is our best player. But, without wishing to sound harsh, he won’t get player of the year from the lads. David will.”

The 28-year-old, who has been transformed by Ian Holloway into a holding midfielder since his £200,000 move from Real Sociedad, has played a key role in Blackpool’s successes this season and will play through the pain of a hip injury to try and help his side avoid relegation.

Vaughan made his return from a three week injury lay-off to help his side to a 1-1 draw with Newcastle on Saturday, and boss Holloway said of the result: “The difference between this week’s performance and last week’s showed how important David is to us.”
