‘POWERHOUSE’ Lusaka opened their 2011 Zambia Rugby Football Union (ZRFU) national rugby league account on a losing note to champions Red Arrows, who cruised to their third successive victory of the season to trail leaders Diggers by a point at the pinnacle of the table.
‘Men At Work’ Diggers thumped Chibuluma 29-3 to move top of the log on 14 points with Arrows trailing closely on 13 points after beating Lusaka, who were playing their first match after the tragic accident that claimed the lives of coach Owen Busange and two players, Kapasa Bwalya and Mwango Katema.
Elsewhere, Green Buffaloes choked up their first league victory after handing Mufulira a 59-8 humiliating defeat to move up to six points while Green Eagles’ title aspirations crumbled following a 10-5 defeat to Nchanga in Chingola.
In the Showground’s main arena, Arrows secured maximum points, thanks to first-half two tries from Daniel Sakala and one from Ephraim Musukwa that saw Alex Mwila making only one conversion.
Arrows could only manage a penalty in the second half through Chizola Banda while Lusaka scored a try through Sanika Mwale that Terry Kafwimbi failed to convert but went on to score two penalties.
Chibuluma 3 Diggers 29
Diggers’ dominance continued at the weekend as the former league champions took over sole leadership at the peak of the table, thanks to five tries and two conversions that comfortably sealed the victory.
Beneya Mukwamba placed two converted tries with Grant Mwila, Musonda Kabweand Innocent Kabwe all scoring a try apiece in a match that saw Diggers resting the likes of John Kabwela and Longa Chikwamo. Lawrence Njovu is out injured.
Buffaloes 59 Mufulira 8
Buffaloes resurrected their league title campaign with a resounding victory over a determined Mufulira whose two-match winning streak unceremoniously came to an end to remain stuck on eight points.
Danny Kabila accounted for four tries as Larry Kaushiku added on three tries with Boyd Nyirenda, Tom Luhanga and Oscar Tondo all placing a try for Buffaloes. Sotho Kafwimbe and Kausiku made three conversions each with Chola Chilufya converting one.
Other results saw Nchanga beat Eagles 10-5, Prisons thumped Roan 17-7 with ‘Killer Bees’ Ndola Wanderers thrashing Konkola 32-5.
